Notes - Ronald was born at Hay on the Murrumbidgee River. His father was an inspector of police, who later became a superintendent of police based in Bathurst, in charge of police in 80 country towns in New South Wales west of the Blue Mountains. His father had joined the mounted police as a constable, and his postings prior to Bathurst had included Broken Hill, Hay, Grafton, and Deniliquin.
Ronald completed his education at Cleveland Street Intermediate High School in Sydney.
Ronald left school after the Intermediate Certificate [Year 9] probably around 14 or 15 years of age, and secured a job at The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited, starting as a bank clerk at a town called The Rock near Wagga Wagga. His only brother Stuart also worked for this Bank, which merged into the National Australia Bank in the late 1970s or early 1980s. They obtained their jobs through some connection between their father Alexander Johnston [the police superintendent] and a bank director Sir Thomas Dibbs.
Ronald and his wife retired to Marrickville.
Ronald and Flora met on the Sydney Harbour Ferry which crossed from Milson's Point to the City before the Harbour Bridge was built.
