In his early teens he got his first horse & cart this was the start of early mornings to harness the horse & cart then set off to the fruit markets in Steel St Newcastle. By the time he loaded the cart, drove back to Cardiff, that poor horse was knacked. He then changed horses and set off for a hard days work trying to sell as much as he possibly could, getting home around 9pm. He did this 6 days a week. On quite a few occasions Franks father would go searching for him if he hadn’t returned by this time, usually finding him under a street light trying to sell what was left in his cart. Sundays weren’t his day off, he would set off with horse & cart around the streets of Lake Macquarie looking for bottles to sell back to shop keepers for an extra bob or two. At the age of 18 he got his first ute which would of made his job that little bit easier.

With his nephew Bill Mcnaught, the two became very well known around the suburbs of Lake Macquarie especially Cardiff on their fruit runs. This was a proud job Frank held for 72 years retiring in 2002 at the age of 82.

  • Notes
    • Franks other interests were his dairy farm at Wyong that he owned for 12 years and also a paddock at Quorrobolong near Cessnock.
From time to time he owned greyhounds & trotters. He spent many hours with his dogs and his nephew, John Sweet, who trained Frank's dogs for him. These times together were special to them both.
