    • Charles died of pneumonia. His death was unexpected. For a considerable time past, the late Mr. Barton's health has been far from satisfactory. Recently he decided on a trip to England, but it was abandoned on the advice of his medical attendant, and he entered a private hospital in Sydney. Reports received of his progress were of a reassuring character, and on Friday morning a telegram came to hand stating that he was getting on well. This had hardly been read when another was received announcing his death, and it can easily be understood that the announcement came as a shock.

    • CHARLES HAMPDEN BARTON (1848-1812)
      A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Charles Hampden Barton, born on 8th July, 1848 at Boree Nyrang and baptised by the Rev. T. B. Naylor from Carcoar on 17th September, was the second son of Robert and Emily. His sponsors (Godparents) were listed in the family Bible as his uncle, Thomas Charles Barton, a younger brother of Robert; John Hampden Gledstanes Esq. (a wealthy London banker); and Mrs. Naylor.

Charles was 15 years old when news came to Boree Nyrang of his father's death in Sydney. He and the other five younger children moved with Emily to "Rockend", Gladesville. In those days at "Rockend" there were no sharks and he swam in the Parramatta River at that point. There was a cup too which he won at rowing but it is not engraved and the history of it is lost. He was educated at Mr. Southery's school.

On leaving school he joined the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Ltd. and worked in their branches at Hill End and Sofala. He then became manager of the Parkes Branch. While he was at Parkes, Annie Smith used to visit her brother Jago at Toogong Station where Charles got to know her. They were married on 6th December, 1877 shortly after he opened the branch of the Bank at Wellington. After his marriage he lived at Vis a Vis, Montefiores. Later he bought the present block of land for the CBC and when the building was completed they moved into the quarters over the Bank.

Charles bought Nanima in 1898 and the house was completed in 1901 just in time for Phyllis McKeown (nee Martin), their first grandchild, to be born there. By that time he had also purchased Towri and after they moved into Nanima he resigned from the Bank. He later purchased Murrungandi.

Charles stood for the NSW Legislative Assembly and was elected as a member of Sir Charles Wade's government (1907-1910). At the next election he was not selected by his party as he had favoured the railway line to Merrygoen running from Wellington not Dubbo and this led to bitter feelings in the western end of his constituency and the seat was won by the Labor Party.

While a member he made Mount Arthur at Wellington a reserve, thus preserving one of its beauty spots. He fought for a new hospital which was commenced during his term. On one of his electioneering trips the wheel of his buggy passed over a stump and upset it, injuring him internally. He never fully recovered and died on 21st December, 1912) at the age of 63 years.

He was the first to grow wheat on a large scale as far west as Wellington. One year they grew 3000 acres at Towri and over 100 men were employed at harvest time. (A photograph of one of these magnificent crops is held at Nanima).

During his term as manager of the Wellington branch of the CBC he was very involved in local activities. He played cricket with the local team, was on the committee of St. John's Church and the hospital and was a Major in the Citizen Military Forces. The hospital was his pet project and when you stand beside his grave you look straight at it on the side of the hill across the river.

Member of Farmers and Settlers Association; oarsman in youth. (NSW Gov)
