Davies, George William Hope

-
Name Davies, George William Hope Born 6 Nov 1870 Off The Cape Of Good Hope - The "Hope" in the name came from being born at sea off the Cape of Good Hope as the family travelled to Australia. He was on board the "Parramatta" bound for NSW.
The "Parramatta" was a wooden full-rigged ship built of teak equipped with iron beams and was launched in 1866 by James Laing in Sunderland. She was 231' in length, had a beam of 38' and a draught of 22' and had a gross registered tonnage (GRT) of 1521 (1298 tons under deck and 190 tons under a raised quarter deck).
The "Parramatta" was employed in the Australian cargo and passenger trade and made several voyages from Sydney to England carrying wool. It took the "Parramatta" about 90 days to sail from Sydney to England. As a very popular passenger ship in the early days, it was claimed that people would delay their sailing for a month or two to be able to travel on her. In January 1898, she sailed from Sapelo, Galveston, TX, for Ling's Lynn, Norfolk, with a cargo of pitch-pine and disappeared on the way.
