Notes - Maria was born at Jellasore, in India, where her father had an indigo plantation. As there were no schools in India when she was young, her father undertook her education himself, instructing her and her eleven brothers and sisters in the classics, history and science, while her mother saw to their religious upbringing. Maria and her husband Thomas departed England for NSW in 1870 where four of Marias older brothers had already settled.
